# Maintenance Alerts & Service Tracking

WatchMy.bike helps you stay on top of bike maintenance with smart service intervals. Set distance-based or time-based reminders and never miss a service again.

## Understanding Service Intervals

A service interval defines when a component needs attention. WatchMy.bike supports two types:

### Distance-Based Intervals
Triggered when a component reaches a certain distance. Best for:
- **Chain**: Every 3,000-5,000 km (depending on conditions)
- **Brake pads**: Every 1,000-3,000 km
- **Tires**: Every 3,000-8,000 km
- **Cassette**: Every 10,000-15,000 km

### Time-Based Intervals
Triggered after a set number of days. Best for:
- **Suspension service**: Every 50-100 hours or annually
- **Hydraulic brake bleed**: Annually
- **Full tune-up**: Every 6-12 months
- **Cable/housing replacement**: Annually

## Setting Up Service Intervals

### For a New Component
When adding a component, you can set:
1. **Expected Lifespan**: Total distance before replacement (e.g., 5,000 km for a chain)
2. **Service Interval**: Distance or time between service (e.g., clean chain every 500 km)

### For an Existing Component
1. Go to the component's detail page
2. Click "Service Intervals"
3. Add a new interval with:
   - **Name**: What needs to be done (e.g., "Lube chain", "Check wear")
   - **Type**: Distance or Time
   - **Interval**: How often (e.g., 500 km or 30 days)
   - **Description**: Optional details about the service

### Drivetrain

## Receiving Notifications

### Dashboard Alerts
Your dashboard shows components that are:
- **Due for service**: At or past their service interval
- **Approaching service**: Within 10% of their interval
- **Critical**: Past expected lifespan

### Email Notifications
WatchMy.bike sends daily email summaries (at 8 AM UTC) if you have:
- Components past their service interval
- Components approaching service (configurable threshold)

To manage email preferences:
1. Go to **Settings > Notifications**
2. Enable/disable maintenance emails
3. Set your preferred reminder threshold

## Logging Service History

When you perform maintenance:

1. Go to the component's detail page
2. Click "Log Service"
3. Enter:
   - **Date**: When you performed the service
   - **Service Type**: Select from your defined intervals
   - **Notes**: What you did, parts replaced, observations
4. The interval resets from this service date/distance

### Why Log Service?
- Tracks your complete maintenance history
- Resets the service interval countdown
- Helps you understand component longevity
- Creates a record for resale value

## Component Lifespan vs Service Intervals

These are different concepts:

- **Expected Lifespan**: When to replace the component entirely (e.g., chain at 5,000 km)
- **Service Interval**: When to perform maintenance (e.g., lube chain every 500 km)

A component can have multiple service intervals but only one expected lifespan.

## Tips for Effective Maintenance Tracking

1. **Start with essentials**: Chain, tires, brake pads. Add more as needed.
2. **Be realistic**: Set intervals you'll actually follow.
3. **Log everything**: Even quick maintenance is worth recording.
4. **Adjust over time**: Your riding conditions affect wear. Modify intervals based on experience.
5. **Check regularly**: Review your dashboard weekly to catch upcoming service.

## Integrating with Strava

If you've connected Strava:
- Component distances update automatically
- Service intervals use real ride data
- No manual distance tracking needed

This makes distance-based intervals extremely accurate and hands-off.
